March Wellness: Grief in the Workplace

March's wellness education was presented by Raelyn VanPelt of Marketplace Chaplains.

Cox Manufacturing provides monthly wellness education meetings for employees, each with a focus on some aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This month's wellness education was presented by Raelyn VanPelt, a long-time partner of Cox through her work at Marketplace Chaplains. Raelyn defined techniques and strategies for dealing with grief.

Raelyn began the education by defining grief and its causes, then went on to describe various symptoms and stages of grief. While many were already familiar with the stages, several employees learned about the different manifestations of the stages, from absenteeism to emotional outbursts. Also discussed were the effects of these manifestations in the workplace, such as increased employee turnover, decreased productivity, and disruption to customers, suppliers, and other business partners.

Raelyn used these effects to stress the importance of being able to effectively communicate grief and help others that are grieving. She taught Cox employees about open communication and the significance of listening to the person in grief, instead of talking. She also gave suggestions of what and what not to say to a grieving person.

Jesus replied:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it:
Love your neighbor as yourself.
All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Matthew 22:36-40
